The new Solus 3 Linux has been released by the development of Team. This third edition is released after Solus has adopted a rolling release model. Here we are going to provide you a very simple review for the same.

Solus 3 Linux is based on Kernel 4.12.7 which provided better hardware support. A notable change in Solus 3 is in the form of support for Snaps package management system(SMS).

The first release of Solus distro was done in 2015. After the release, it get many loyal users as it has a beautiful look & user experience & user friendly environment. After one year in 2016, Solus announced that it is moving to the rolling release.

Solus Linux 3 Release

Now , at present, we are talking about the Solus 3 that is released in August 2017. Solus 3 has come with so many new features. First of all as we already told that the Solus 3 is a rolling release. The third version of Solus 3 has improved so many things in terms of performance improvements and new features.

The developers of Solus has released the new better version of Solus 3. So here we are going to tell you some of the new &improved feature of Solus 3. The official announcement has already told that they have combined the features of release & rolling model.

Solus 3  features

The general features of Solus 3 includes the following.

  • Firefox 55.0.1
  • LibreOffice 5.4.0.3
  • Rhythmbox 3.4.1 with the latest release of the Alternative Toolbar extension
  • Thunderbird 52.2.1

Hardware and Kernel Enablement

Solus 3 is based on Kernel 4.12.7. With the new kernel , there are various other improvements in hardware for the latest AMD, Intel or NVIDIA hardware.  Existing users will get the update for the kernel they have & they will also get the new update in september.

There is a new feature called AppArmor LSM included by default to provide a functionality for snapd confining.

The graphical performance is improved by the upgrade in Mesa 17.16 & libtxc_dxtn. There are various new features in the Bluetooth & wireless keyboards. The driver for various computer peripherals like printer & scanner are also available.

Multimedia Upgrades

The multimedia upgrades include the latest version of encoder & new multimedia filters. This includes various new upgrades like ffmpeg 3.3.3, VAAPI-accelerated MPEG-2 and VP8 encoding. There is also support for ffmpeg in cdio, openal, webp, and other libraries.

Support for Snaps

This feature support for snaps , universal software package for linux. The platform specific software are no longer an issue. The software can be taken from any distribution methods.

Improvements in Budgie desktop

The default environment of Solus Linux distro is Budgie. Budgie 10.x is installed in Solus 3. It comes with Adapt GTK Theme, Papirus Icon Theme, and Noto Sans font. The position of primary panel is shifted from top to bottom.

New Night Light Applet

The new version of Budgie has a new Night Light applet that helps our eye strain by controlling blue light.

Places

The place indicator applet comes with a new option to expand the places section. The places section is a click button now. The icon is now changed to apt folder icon which represents places rather than disks.

  • Calendar widget in Raven has remove the date selection , if you change the month.
  • The Icon tasklist applet is not having list of “derper” applications now.
  • The user indicator got a new update & refined icons.

Download Solus 3 ISO file & SOLUS System requirements

Download the installation files from the official website. The size may take 1.3 GB of disk usage. You will need 10 GB of disk space for installation.
